27th (C-)HPP Workshop and 20th HUPO Congress program
C-HPP Workshop on Next Steps for the C-HPP and neXtProt
29 May 2023 7:34 PM
The C-HPP is holding a workshop prior to the HUPO 2023 Congress in Busan, Korea at the Centum Premier Hotel in the "Chelsea and Liverpool rooms" on Sunday, 17th September, 09:30 –15:00.
After the workshop, the HUPO Council Meeting (by invitation at 15:30), Opening Plenary (17:45) and Welcome Networking Reception (19:30) will take place at the BEXCO Convention Center, just one block away. The Sunday workshop allows for attendees to arrive on Saturday, facilitating transfers from ICN if not arriving in Busan, and for the international attendees to rest and recover before the main conference.
Those who would like to be present are asked to register using the this spreadsheet
Agenda
The main foci for the Workshop are (i) short business meeting for reports and C-HPP Chromosome team updates and elections. Then we move to the second focus of this workshop which would be new directions for the C-HPP with a Human Proteome PTM action plan, MPs, and CP50 (as part of the Grand Challenge) and neXtProt.
Preliminary Program
09:30 Meet and Greet coffee/tea
10:00-12:00 Session 1
Welcome, quick Chromosome Team updates:
- neXtProt, human proteome numbers from the 2023-04-18 release (Lydie Lane, Eric Deutsch, Nuno Banderia). This presentation is available in pdf format here.
- HPP (Cecilia Lindskog)
- JPR Special Issue (Chris Overall)
- Other business from matters arising from the PIC.
- Special presentation on “Chemoproteomics as an enabling technology for the aims of the C-HPP for PTM, MPs or CP50 research” by Ho Jeong Kwon, Director, Chemical Genomics Leader Research Initiative, Yonsei University, President-Elect, Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (KSBMB).
12:00 - 13:00 Lunch
13:00 Session 2: Future Aims and plans for the C-HPP/HPP and neXtProt
Discussions will include new directions for the C-HPP with an action plan for Human Proteome PTM, MPs, and CP50 (as part of the Grand Challenge) incorporating neXtProt.
15:00 Meeting closes
(15:30 HUPO Council)
HPP Day (September 21, 2023) – Emerging Strategies to Address Protein Functions
The Human Proteome Project (HPP) is HUPO’s flagship project. It is designed to map the entire human proteome in a systematic effort using currently available and emerging techniques. In 2021, the HPP launched the Grand Challenge, the objective of which is to identify a function for every human protein. During the HPP Day at HUPO 2023, different strategies to predict or address the functional properties of proteins in the context of cells will be presented and discussed. Be sure to register for this outstanding program! All HUPO 2023 delegates are welcome to attend.

Important note
During the discussion of "13:00 Session 2: Future Aims and plans for the C-HPP/HPP and neXtProt" Charles Pineau provided a proposition for to describe the functional annotation status of human proteins as follows:
Molecular Function vs. cellular/network function
- FE1: (Gold) Direct function shown with orthogonal confirmation (another substrate, same substrate, different lab, biochemical, MS, antibody, e.g. to Phosphosite
? Candidate FE1 has one set of data but no orthogonal confirmation
- FE2: (Silver) Direct or indirect association with function. e.g., knockdown or overexpression led to a phenotype by association. i.e., protein is involved in a pathway, but not known its specific function.
Orthologue function in other species with known function.
- FE3: (Bronze) Function inferred by homology with other family members but not directly or indirectly associated with the function.
- FE4: Predicted function by AI/ML/ other
- FE5: protein with unknown function known, by direct or indirect association, homology or function.
- uPE1: unknown function of a PE1 protein (tools available for its study)
- Proteins with unidentified functions = FE2 – FE5.
