Respiratory Disease B/D-HPP workshop

HPP Early Morning Sessions

Wednesday, October 8, 2014 (8:00 – 9:20) Room B

Respiratory Diseases
Organizer: Rainer Bischoff.

This workshop has the goal to establish Respiratory Disease as a new area in the B/D-HPP program of HUPO.

Selected Topics:
8:00 – 8:10 am The need to establish a respiratory disease area as part of the B/D-HPP program (Rainer Bischoff, University of Groningen, Netherlands). This presentation in pdf format is available here.
8:10 – 8:20 am What we can learn from Proteogenomics approaches (Peter Horvatovich, University of Groningen, Netherlands). This presentation in pdf format is available here.
8:20 – 8:30 am Biobanking (Gyorgy Marko-Varga, Tom Fehniger, Lund University, Sweden). This presentation in pdf format is available here.
8:30 – 8:40 am The role of glycans in COPD (Naoyuki Taniguchi, RIKEN and RIKEN-Max Planck Joint Research Center, Japan). This presentation in pdf format is available here.
8:40 – 8:50 am The clinical need for proteomics research in respiratory disease (Xiangdong Wang, Fudan University, Shanghai, China).
8:50 – 9:20 am Panel discussion: Consortium building, sub-topics (e.g. asthma, COPD), funding opportunities/strategies.

Minutes:

First of all thank you for a lively and inspiring meeting this morning. I tried to summarize our discussion in the minutes below focusing on the follow up actions.

It became clear during the meeting that proteomics alone is not going to make a difference for respiratory diseases but that we believe strongly that it can make an important contribution. In order to carry this message to the other stakeholders, which are clinicians, biobanking experts, bioinformaticians and statisticians, we need to connect to the respective societies and networks. To do so I propose to nominate ‘’champions’’ that take it as their action to make these contacts and to start establishing the wider network. I’ve made a few suggestions below. Please let me know whether you are willing to take on this role or propose alternative colleagues that you think would be better suited to move this part forward.

  • European Respiratory Society – Rainer Bischoff (contact Jean Bousquet, Montpellier, France) – Jean already expressed interest in our initiative per mail.
  • American Thoracic Society – Tom Fehniger
  • Japanese Respiratory Society – Naoyuki Taniguchi
  • Chinese Respiratory Society – Xiandong Wang
  • Bioinformatics Networks and Proteogenomics – Peter Horvatovich
  • Biobanks – Gyorgy Marko-Varga

If we could initiate these contacts within the coming 4 weeks, that would be great.

To follow up on our meeting in Madrid, I suggest to organize an electronic meeting (e.g. via Skype) once we have established the above contacts (late 2014 or early 2015).

From the European side we could try to establish a COST action around the topic of Respiratory Disease. We need, however, feedback from the experts in the field (see above) to avoid overlaps and duplications with existing actions. This can only be done once we have feedback from the clinical colleagues and notably from the ERS in this case.

ALL, please let me know which funding opportunities you see in your parts of the world for this topic.

Some concrete ideas that came forward during our meeting:

  • Anti-oxidant defense is an interesting target area with respect to susceptibility to COPD
  • The protease – antiprotease balance is another promising target area. Maybe Chris Overall could be interested to join or at least advice as an expert in this field?
  • Changes in protein glycosylation and glycosaminoglycans (e.g. related to Wnt signaling)
