A Guide To C-HPP Activities in Madrid and Segovia
1. Introduction
- During the past 8 months, we had many successful C-HPP scientific meetings in several places such as Busan (March 26, 2014), Sydney (July 30, 2014; by Mark Baker), and Bangkok (August 9, 2014). We are now in much better position to set out future plans and discuss all pending issues for our project in Madrid (Oct 5-8) and Segovia (Oct 9 see Appendix 5).
- We are pleased to announce that Fernando Corrales has been approved to be a new PI for Chr 16 (termed General Coordinator) by the Spanish Granting Agency (The IP assembly of ProteoRed). He will assume the job previously hold by Juan Pablo Albar. In our PIC meeting in Madrid (Wed, Oct 8, 08:00-09:20, Room C), his role as PI for Chr 16 will be formally approved by PIC members.
- Enclosed please find the updated version of workshop plans in Madrid (11th C-HPP Workshop) and Segovia (Joint HPP meeting). We hope all of you will sign up these two meetings where you will find many updated agenda on the future HPP development. In Madrid PIC meeting (on Wed), we will discuss few key pending issues as well as new plans for 2015 (Milano meeting June 23, 2015; JPR special issue publication, middle of 2015 etc.) (see Appendix 4 for details). If PI of any chromosome group is not available at the PIC meeting, please let us know his/her designator (voting right is given only to the confirmed representative) by Oct 1, 2014.

We encourage you to send us the names of nominee for this position by Oct 1. Potential candidate may be from the European Region to maintain the balance between regions.

3. C-HPP Activity Report to HUPO Council:
As determined in the previous PIC meeting in Boston and also suggested by HPP EC that C-HPP team is mandated to report their activity to HUPO council as well as SSAB members for their invaluable inputs and advice.
The scientific annual report: Publication of papers that are relevant to the C-HPP is regarded as these type of report and thus off-sets the obligation of report submission to C-HPP EC. We will formally submit the list of papers with pdf files to SSAB which will also be shared with HPP EC at the ened of this year.
4. Segovia HPP Satellite and Town Hall Meeting in 2014 (see Appendix 5):
Bill’s Suggestions
Goal: To increase protein annotation (missing and orphan proteins so that B/D studies will be richer and more informative
Roundtable: bioinformatics covering the topics of the joint session. Goal is to drive consensus on the deposition of large proteomic data sets and acceptance into the data bases (PeptideAtlas, GPM.DB and Next prot). Discussion should include the framework of the 5 steps of acceptance of an individual laboratory results.
Rapid fire reports of each of the chromosome Pis.
Discussion of the integration of C-HPP and B/D HPP:
- A cross HPP effort to find the missing proteins (share information on sample sets, ensure deposition of data sets to ProteomeXchange, identify sources of rare sample sets, promote study of rare diseases,)
- Cross validation of proteomic results with antibody data in ProteinAtlas (analysis of protein families by unique peptide sequence or unique epitopes). Choose 3 protein families as test cases.
- Develop effective antibody capture reagents for the missing or orphan proteins, example collaboration between ProteinAtlas and Monash Ab facility
- How to generate data on protein interactions for the ‘orphan’ proteins.
- Most proteins are not mapped into protein pathways except by homology with well studied proteins. How can we proceed to expand our pathway knowledge?
- Targeted PTM analysis of the poorly characterized proteins
Back to the future, proteomics to protein chemistry
- The need for multiple enzyme digestions and top down MS for full sequence determination to characterize small changes in amino acid sequence (ASVs and SNVs). This will require good Ab capture reagents.
- Genome annotation in terms of protein expression/ common functions in a given genomic region

Poster sessions are intended to showcase research in a format that is easy to scan and absorb quickly. This session is designed to facilitate more in-depth discussion of the research than is typically possible in a symposium format.
At least one author is required to be in attendance at the poster for the entire duration of the panel session.
Posters should fit on 90 cm wide x 120 cm high poster boards (view sample below).
Push-pins will be provided. Each poster will be identified with a number. This number corresponds to the number printed in the program for your presentation.
The success of the poster session depends on the ability of the viewers to readily understand the material. Observe the following guidelines in the preparation for your poster session.
- Prepare all poster material ahead of time;
- Keep the presentation simple;
- Do not mount materials on heavy board because these may be difficult to keep in position on the poster board;
- Prepare a visual summary of the research with enough information to stimulate interested viewers rather than a written research paper. Use bulleted phrases rather than narrative text;
- Prepare distinct panels on the poster to correspond with the major parts of the presentation. For example, consider including a panel for each of the following: Introduction, methods, results, conclusions, and references;
- Number each panel so that the reader can follow along in the order intended.
- Ensure that all poster materials can be read from three feet away. We suggest an Arial font with bold characters. Titles and headings should be at least 1 inch high. DO NOT use a 12 point font.
- Prepare a title board for the top of the poster space indicating the title and author(s). The lettering for this title should be no less than 1.5 inches high.

Annoncement of Lola Segura regarding Segovia C-HPP Workshop on 7 October 2014
Transportation will be provided (bus) from the Feria de Madrid (Main Conference location) to Segovia (50 min-1h) October 8 evening, as well as coffee and lunch breaks, dinner and a guided City tour (October 9). The remaining expenses of two hotel nights, dinner October 8 and travel back to Madrid by high speed train (35 min, 20 €) should be arranged by each attendee individually. BUS DEPARTURE: Bus departure is scheduled on 8th October at 20:30h from Hotel Pullman.
However, there will be a Meeting Point at 20:15h at the North Gate of the convention center (Registration Area) to guide the attendees to the buses.

- From Madrid: Bus departing Madrid for Segovia will be ready for all participants who signed up for Segovia meeting. More detailed info will be available later.
- From Segovia to Madrid: The participants can select either Bus or Train for returning to Madrid. Unless otherwise, the participants are responsible for their own arrangement of hotel and one way transportation (from Segovia to Madrid). For those invited speakers, there may be separate information as to transportation from/to Madrid/Segovia when the local organizers send them a letter of invitation. This is subject to change.
